Help Us Prepare for the Cold: Winter Boot Drive
Fall in Vermont is a season of beauty with vibrant foliage, crisp air, cozy fires, shared meals, and apple picking. For many, it’s a time of comfort and connection.
But for those experiencing homelessness, fall is a stark reminder that freezing temperatures are just around the corner, and the need for protection, especially warm winter boots, becomes urgent.
Why Winter Boots Matter:
-
People experiencing homelessness walk an average of 10 miles per day, regardless of weather or conditions
-
Over 65% of people experiencing homelessness suffer from foot-related health problems, including blisters, frostbite, infections, and trench foot
-
One study found that foot problems are the third most common health concern among people experiencing homelessness
-
Many foot conditions worsen due to wet, worn-out, or ill-fitting shoes, which can lead to long-term complications like hospitalization or even amputation
Each year, we partner with Gadue’s Dry Cleaning to provide warm coats to those in need. This October, we’re calling on our community to help collect new winter boots, one of the most urgently needed, yet least donated items for our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness.
