Flourishing gardens, Pinterest-inspired crafts and evenings at Centennial Field — the idyllic Burlington, Vermont summer is spent outdoors, and with a community. At COTS’ Daystation, community is an essential value to the success of the guests. “We try to build community on different levels, and you know in the community, some people like to go to bingo, or do other things that aren’t focused on what’s wrong with you,” Daystation…

We want share with you exciting news! COTS is moving forward with our plans to rebuild a permanent new home for the Daystation, our daytime center for single adults, and create 14 new units of supportive housing. As you might recall, the Daystation was destroyed by a catastrophic flood in July 2012. Since that time, COTS has continued to operate the program from temporary, interim locations — initially at the First…

Thanks to the Intervale Gleaning and Food Rescue, the Daystation has been able to serve fresh vegetables every day to our clients.  We serve lunch at the Daystation, 365 days a year, as a part of the services we provide for…

You’re probably pretty familiar with the concept of the haircut. Everyone needs them from time to time. I didn’t think there were any more surprises to be had from a visit to the stylist. Sure, every once in a while you walk away with a bad haircut, but the experience itself is fairly predicable. You sit down, explain the cut you want, and have a little chat with the man…

Ellen Reader, VHCB AmeriCorps State Daystation Community Support Specialist, and Maggie Thuma, former Daystation and Single Case Management BSW intern, have brought their vision and passion to the Daystation’s Women’s Group. Driven by a common interest, Ellen and Maggie put their heads together to provide an unmet need to the womanly presence that frequently (albeit in smaller numbers than the men) passes through the Daystation doors. They wanted to create a space…

We are so grateful to have the wonderful support of First United Methodist Church and the community as we open our interim Daystation location for the coming winter season.  Having a warm and safe space away from the elements is so important as the weather gets colder. Many thanks!

Yesterday our Executive Director, Rita Markley, was excited to announce that a community partnership with the First United Methodist Church has resulted in a temporary space for sheltering homeless adults in the Burlington area through the end of March.  The church is offering their parsonage on Buell Street for the coming winter. Recently, Rita’s been running against the clock to secure a relocated Daystation shelter before the winter chill arrived….

On the weekend of September 20–23, 2012, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel held their second annual Charity Sock Sale.  And we are so thankful for the generous donation of socks!  Besides setting aside an extra pair of socks for donation to local homeless shelters during the sock sale, Lenny’s also made monetary donations for each pair sold. When all was said and done, we had 4 large boxes of Darn Tough…

On Sept. 22-23, 2012, Marty Martinez, a members of the COTS Veterans Advisory Council, launched their first Stand Down event for homeless veterans in Vermont at the Winooski High School. Martinez said he was motivated by the need he saw, given the latest census data; every night there are 60 homeless vets in the state of Vermont.  He wanted to use Stand Down to help find those 60 individuals and connect…
