Getting out into the community and connecting with people who want to learn more about what we do is one of my favorite parts about being the Community Outreach Specialist at COTS. We have a robust Speaker’s Bureau, which means that anyone can reach out to schedule a guest speaker from COTS to talk to their school, business, or community organization. Members of our Bureau include COTS staff members, seasoned…

Ellen Reader, VHCB AmeriCorps State Daystation Community Support Specialist, and Maggie Thuma, former Daystation and Single Case Management BSW intern, have brought their vision and passion to the Daystation’s Women’s Group. Driven by a common interest, Ellen and Maggie put their heads together to provide an unmet need to the womanly presence that frequently (albeit in smaller numbers than the men) passes through the Daystation doors. This year’s Coolest Lunch was a blast! We had 130 online reservations plus walk-ins and raised over $3,000!  Groups of students, coworkers, and friends ventured into the nippy outdoors and did their part to raise awareness for those who face exposure to the elements all day long. Cheer and good spirits were high among participants.  The food was donated by the restaurants allowing 100% of proceeds to go straight towards helping fund homeless services and programs during…

A recent report from the Office of the Attorney General, “Where Have all the Dollars Gone (2012)?” states that third party fundraisers are getting a much larger piece of the pie than the nonprofits those dollars are being raised for. To be precise, the report says “…over the past two years Vermonters donated $6,052,835 to charities through paid fundraisers. Of this donation total, paid fundraisers retained $4,156,112, while the charities…

On the weekend of September 20–23, 2012, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel held their second annual Charity Sock Sale.  And we are so thankful for the generous donation of socks!  Besides setting aside an extra pair of socks for donation to local homeless shelters during the sock sale, Lenny’s also made monetary donations for each pair sold. When all was said and done, we had 4 large boxes of Darn Tough…
