This is the time of year when we celebrate your many contributions to COTS and reflect on why they matter. This is also the day when we thumb our noses at nutritional convention and offer…

Champlain College Convocation, August 23, 2013 COTS Executive Director Rita Markley’s keynote address (Champlain College has honored Rita with the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award.) I am so honored to receive this award and be here with you today. (And what a great occasion excuse to wear these fabulous oversized sunglasses. Just in case you’re wondering, I did not inherit these from Jackie Onassis. I know how rumors get started so…

Getting out into the community and connecting with people who want to learn more about what we do is one of my favorite parts about being the Community Outreach Specialist at COTS. We have a robust Speaker’s Bureau, which means that anyone can reach out to schedule a guest speaker from COTS to talk to their school, business, or community organization. Members of our Bureau include COTS staff members, seasoned…

Ellen Reader, VHCB AmeriCorps State Daystation Community Support Specialist, and Maggie Thuma, former Daystation and Single Case Management BSW intern, have brought their vision and passion to the Daystation’s Women’s Group. Driven by a common interest, Ellen and Maggie put their heads together to provide an unmet need to the womanly presence that frequently (albeit in smaller numbers than the men) passes through the Daystation doors. They wanted to create a space…

I remember the experience with incredible clarity. My friends, my friend’s…

My simple answer was that I hadn’t realized how varied the causes of homelessness are and how thin the veil can be between those who have a home and those who don’t. I told this friend the story of my first meeting with a homeless person. Last spring we were planning for…

Thank you to all our COTS friends (old and new) who helped make our 30th Anniversary Gala so much fun! It was clear from the start that attendees enjoyed seeing familiar faces during the cocktail hour hosted by Presenting Sponsor REMN.  Many were flowing from cluster to cluster sharing memories and their personal connections with COTS. After cocktails, it was the dinner hour.  And similar to special occasions at home, co-hosts Chris Bohjalian and Stephen…
