My name is Shelby, and I am a student at Big Picture South Burlington, an alternative high school. My  program gives me the opportunity to learn through real world experiences and my passions. After briefly learning about homelessness in the Boston and Burlington communities, I decided to take action, and gain as much knowledge I could about the subject in an effort to destroy apathy. I am now an intern…

This year, on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, we are part of a call to action that will change the calendar and help make history. We are celebrating a day dedicated to giving – when charities, families, businesses, community centers, students, retailers and more will all come together for #GivingTuesday – a movement to celebrate giving and kick-off the holiday giving season. Where did the idea come from? The retail industry has…

Local songwriter Jamie Bright (aka Silent Mind) plans to join us for the 25th Annual COTS Walk on May4. He will perform on the Battery Park stage. The 25th Annual COTS Walk kicks off at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4. The fundraiser is a 3.5-mile trek around downtown Burlington starting from Battery Park, following the route a person who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless might travel to receive shelter and services. This is the one day of the year that the nationally recognized nonprofit opens its programs to the community so people can see…

Having signed up for the COTS Walk, or any event where fundraising is necessary, getting pledges to flow in can be intimidating.  Not everyone is the best at going around to friends, or even strangers, and getting them to donate for nothing in return. The New York Times Sunday Review had an interesting Op-Ed this past weekend by Arthur C. Brooks on the many benefits of fundraising to the fundraiser personally: “Charitable giving improves…

The COTS Walk was founded by two amazing volunteers, Lucy Samara and Gail Anderson. The first Walk kicked off in 1990 – and has been a spring tradition in our community for now 25 years.  At COTS Annual Meeting in the fall, an award recognizing tremendous service to the COTS Walk is given in Lucy and Gail’s names. We are incredibly grateful to the many volunteers, walkers and sponsors who have…

When you think homeless, what is the first face you see? Take a moment and answer honestly. Did you think of a young woman living in poverty and trying to raise her infant child? Did you think of an elderly veteran who suffers from PTSD and lives in chronic pain from a wartime injury? Did you think of an entire family that encountered challenges in the recession and lost their…

Getting out into the community and connecting with people who want to learn more about what we do is one of my favorite parts about being the Community Outreach Specialist at COTS. We have a robust Speaker’s Bureau, which means that anyone can reach out to schedule a guest speaker from COTS to talk to their school, business, or community organization. Members of our Bureau include COTS staff members, seasoned…

As COTS celebrated its 30th Anniversary Gala, keynote speaker and Vermont author, Stephen Kiernan, asked the audience to remember their first meeting with a person experiencing homelessness. Growing up in a small rural town in Maine, I had no memorable experiences with homelessness until I took a trip, at age 13, with my best friends to Queens, New York. I remember the experience with incredible clarity. My friends, my friend’s…
