Parents can appreciate the challenges of getting your children to make healthy eating choices – from costs, to creative cooking, to ultra-picky eaters. Sometimes, it’s a difficult to simply get a family meal together. Kathrine Mansfield is a VYDC AmeriCorps member, serving in COTS children’s programs this year. Her service mission is to help improve nutrition and wellness for children experiencing homelessness. And, she thought one way she could achieve…

Many of the buildings owned by COTS in downtown Burlington, Vermont, are historic (including several built in the 1800s). As a result, they aren’t as energy efficient as we would like. To address this, COTS has implemented an overall plan to update these inefficiencies across our facilities. These planned updates benefit our residents and guests in two ways. The improvements: * Allow for a more comfortable stay in our buildings;…

You’re probably pretty familiar with the concept of the haircut. Everyone needs them from time to time. I didn’t think there were any more surprises to be had from a visit to the stylist. Sure, every once in a while you walk away with a bad haircut, but the experience itself is fairly predicable. You sit down, explain the cut you want, and have a little chat with the man…

Getting out into the community and connecting with people who want to learn more about what we do is one of my favorite parts about being the Community Outreach Specialist at COTS. We have a robust Speaker’s Bureau, which means that anyone can reach out to schedule a guest speaker from COTS to talk to their school, business, or community organization. Members of our Bureau include COTS staff members, seasoned…
