COTS kicked off its 3rd Annual #172vt Back-to-School Drive at the Lake Monsters game last night. Thanks to help from KeyBank, Staples, Rhino Foods and, of course, Champ, the benefit got off to a great start with donated supplies! With the help of the community, we hope to fill 172-plus backpacks for local kids who might otherwise not have the supplies they need to be successful in the coming school year.

COTS, The Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Burlington, The Sara Holbrook Center, and The King Street Center will distribute the backpacks. Supplies also will be given to Spectrum Youth & Family Services.

Through Aug. 31, participating KeyBank and Staples locations are accepting donations of school supplies on behalf of COTS.

We are looking for the following school supplies:

In addition to collection sites for the public to help fill the backpacks, local businesses are also hosting drives to provide supplies. Rhino Foods conducted its employee-drive in advance of the Lake Monsters game so they could deliver their donation and kick off the campaign. Employee drives to support the #172vt Back-to-School Drive are also under way at Westport Hospitality and Gardener’s Supply Co.

In March 2015, COTS launched its #172vt campaign to raise awareness about the 172 homeless children in Chittenden County. In an extension of its #172vt awareness campaign, the #172vt Back-to-School Drive is a community-driven to further support these children and their families as the academic year draws closer.

KeyBank has been a supporter of the backpack effort since its inception, and has doanted the bulk of the backpacks each year.  “At KeyBank, we are committed to helping students thrive and be successful in school, and that includes giving them the basic tools needed to start the school year right,” said KeyBank Corporate Responsibility Officer Brigitte Ritchie. “The #172vt Back-to-School program is a great way to engage our employees and customers in our community efforts to support local school children.”
