Samara-Anderson Walk Award: The Schoolhouse Learning Center

IMG_3148When COTS launched the #172vt Campaign, it was designed to be a call to action. And, boy, was it! From across the community, students answered the call to help children who were facing the crisis of homelessness. They did so in creative and different ways – from a concert at The Spot, to lemonade stands and car washes, from Catchy Cards at farmers’ markets, to collection drives. Their efforts were as unique as the students – and we are inspired and grateful.

One of the first groups of students to respond – did so above and beyond. We are proud today to recognize the efforts of the student and faculty of The Schoolhouse Learning Center.

Several students from The Schoolhouse attended our #172vt kickoff event in March. From that, they came up with the idea of recruiting 172 people to join their newly formed COTS Walk team. And, recruit they did! They tabled on the Church Street Marketplace, with 172 flags, one flag to represent each homeless child. They created a video. They wrote newsletters. And, they joined COTS to be part of the 2015 COTS Walk commercial, produced by WCAX. And, on May 3, they walked – in mass! What an amazing show of support! And, what a difference they have helped make in our community.

We also would like to recognize the individuals and teams who took the COTS Walk Challenge in 2015. Individual Challenge Walkers and Challenge Teams raised $1,000 or more in support of homelessness shelter, services, prevention, and housing.
