National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is held each year the week before Thanksgiving. This is a time for us all to start to think about what we are thankful for, a perfect time to share our compassion with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, and work toward a world where no one has to experience Hunger and Homelessness. Visit to see what awareness events are going on in the community.

4th Annual Zumbathon® for COTS

Sunday, November 15, 1-3 p.m., Contois Auditorium, Burlington City Hall

The Zumbathon® for COTS is a fundraiser organized by former COTS Daystation staffer and Zumba® instructor Kate Barash-Engel. Never done Zumba® before?  No problem!  This is a great opportunity to try it out with friends! Bring water, a towel, shoes, and cash for auction items. November 30 – December 3; December 7 – 8: 5:30 – 9 p.m., 179 S. Winooski Ave, Burlington

Every year, starting the Monday after Thanksgiving, 50-plus COTS volunteers a night “dial for dollars” to raise money for COTS shelters and services. Working five weekday evenings, these enthusiastic volunteers call 6,800 COTS donors from 6 to 9 p.m. and raise more than $190,000.

We are recruiting 15 mailroom volunteers and 45 callers for each of the 6 nights. This fun event has great energy, raffles every half hour, refreshments, and the excitement of seeing immediate results as we calculate how much is being raised as we go. Call Lori at 802-540-3084, Ext. 207 or email to volunteer.

Monday, December 21 5:30 p.m., City Hall steps, Church Street, Burlington

Each year, during the week of the Winter Solstice, people in Burlington pause to reflect on those who are homeless in our community. Advocates and people who are homeless gather outside City Hall to read names, ages and brief vignettes about some of the people who have turned to COTS for help this year. Take time out during the hectic holiday season to remember those who most need our help and focus on what is being done to help them regain independent lives. Songs by school choirs and refreshments inside City Hall round out the hour-long tribute.

UPCOMING: May 1, 2016 COTS WALK at 1 p.m. at Battery Park, Burlington
