We are so thrilled that our volunteer, Peter Keny, was honored with a Building Blocks Award at last week’s Live United breakfast.

Peter began volunteering in COTS family shelters last fall and has provided 2 – 3 hours of support every week since he joined our volunteer network.  He manages to volunteer despite his packed schedule attending classes, working the night shift as a janitor, and helping run the Sudan Development Foundation SUDEF.

Peter is a tremendous asset to our organization – he is flexible, committed, and wonderful with kids.  In particular, his passion for facilitating “Active Adventures” for the children living in family shelter has been a gift to our families.  With his help, children living in our family shelters have gone on many explorations around Burlington, from educational field trips to ECHO, to swimming at the YMCA, to playing soccer at town parks.

Engaging the youth living in shelter in a healthier, more active lifestyle is a central goal in our children’s programming.  And by fostering a love for exploring our community on foot, these Active Adventures plant the seeds for lifelong physical activity and community engagement.  Connecting children in shelter with quality active learning experiences like this gives them the best chance to succeed later in life.

On top of receiving a Building Blocks Award for his volunteer work, Peter was recently the subject of a feature story in the Burlington Free Press.  As a child, Peter saw his homeland, Sudan (now South Sudan), torn apart by civil war.  He left for the United States at the age of 19, and has made Burlington his second home.  You can read more about Peter’s incredible story here: http://bfpne.ws/1O5M2aB

Thank you, Peter, for all of your incredible work!
