We are thrilled to announce that our longtime volunteer Howard Longway has won a United Way 2014 Building Blocks Award in the “income” category.

Howard Longway with Canal Street Program Coordinator/Case Manager, Maggie Schwalbaum

Howard began volunteering and making in-kind donations to the community at Canal Street Veterans Housing when the program first opened in February 2011. Howard is passionate about assisting veterans in need. His generous support and volunteer service have helped many Canal Street veterans return to financial stability and permanent housing.

Howard delivers donations to Canal Street every couple of weeks (at least once a month) that he has artfully collected from local stores, friends and purchased himself. He takes pride in offering new goods and items tailored to the specific needs of individual veterans in the program.

Canal Street Veterans Housing creates housing, not shelter, for formerly homeless veterans. The program provides veterans with time to transition back into the community, allowing participants to stay up to 24 months.

Howard regularly brings toilet paper, paper towels, clothing, books, toys and other items that fulfill basic needs. This past holiday season, Howard brought presents for all the residents that were specifically chosen for each person – everyone felt especially cared for around the season as a result of Howard’s hard work and attention. Each child had a unique box of presents on Christmas morning.

Through it all, Howard has formed wonderful relationships with many of veterans who have been in the program. He continues to connect with past participants who have successfully completed the program and moved into permanent housing. He focuses his attention to ensuring basic needs of the veterans at Canal Street are met, while also making residents feel special. He is gracious in offering a hand up, not a handout, to veterans working to return to financial stability in a challenging economic climate.

One resident of Canal Street writes: “He is always very friendly. … I told him I liked his hat, a (Montreal) Canadiens hat. He took it right off his head and gave it to me! I asked him if he wanted it back. He said, ‘Nope, it’s yours.’ He is always social … takes the time to sit and talk, check in with us personally.”

Our Canal Street Program Coordinator and Case Manager Maggie Schwalbaum writes: “One of the things that I find so inspirational about Howard is how he has taken such responsibility over Canal Street and helping the residents here. …He asks about peoples current needs regularly and has an uncanny ability to remember people’s stories and things they have shared with him. He is an invaluable resource to this community.”

We are bursting with pride and are so happy that Howard has received the recognition he deserves. Congratulations, Howard! And thank you!
