In-Kind Donations: If Not Here, Where?

Posted On October 14, 2013 By | 1 Comment on In-Kind Donations: If Not Here, Where?

With the giving season approaching and the holidays sneaking up on us, now is the perfect time to get the word out on what sorts of in-kind donations (gifts of goods and services) COTS accepts.

At COTS, we believe in the dignity of every human life. For many people, living with dignity means taking pride in the things they use and own. Be it a fresh, clean pillow for an individual to put his or her head down on at night, or a gift card that enables a parent to buy their child’s first-ever holiday present, we try to ensure the donations and gifts we pass along to our guests are the kind that make then feel proud and dignified.

Let us begin by telling you which items we do accept.

Gift cards, diapers, powdered infant formula, and CCTA bus passes are all items we accept. New and unopened toiletries (both travel and standard size), cleaning supplies, new towels, new pillows, and new sheet sets (twin and full) are also acceptable. At this particular point in time, we are in especially great need of new pillows!

Sometimes we will hold special appeals in which we ask for specific seasonal items, such as back-to-school supplies and winter apparel, but otherwise we do not usually accept such items. In the event of a special appeal, we will get the word out to the community. Watch for COTS Facebook posts or check our COTS Wish List.

There are also a number of items we do not accept.

There are many items we do not accept because we don’t have the space or staffing to sort and distribute effectively. We work with community partners, though, whose mission it is to collect and give these items.

COTS does have vouchers to and partnerships with many of these organizations so our clients can pick out exactly what they need when they need it, while also learning to navigate the various community services that are available to supply these needs.

Here’s where you can donate:
